The biggest setback is the lack of storage and optical drive (CD/DVD/BlueRay). Anything a student NEEDS to download (pdf, mp3, .txt, .rtf, accessible audiobooks and more) can be with an iPad. Pages will import .docx files from word. Dropbox will move and store, VoiceOver creates accessibility. MBraille allows braille input for txt and social media. There is a Kindle app for leisure reading and more accessible games than Androind at the present. The biggest question is "What is the educational task?" Also, keep in mind the forward/back translation of braille via refreshable braille display is not 100% accurate.

for work, and the iPad more for leisure. Tammy What grade is the student? The laptop would give much more features that a student would need for wordprocessing and downloading. The iPad could be used as a portable CCTV with a few different apps. I did hear that the iPad can now be equipped with Microsoft Word. I use a laptop

hello all,
need some input if you could. I have a low vision student currently using a laptop, audiobooks, VisioBook and uses a Kindle at home for leisure reading. Mom has requested that we opt for an Ipad or similar device instead of the laptop.
My personal experience with the IPAD type tech is that while it's portable and has many great uses, it simply is not as capable as a laptop in some important ways.
Any input or advice here is welcome...I'd like to be able to accommodate but not if it's going to limit him. The district has purchased the laptop with hd screen and it's a good, high speed laptop, so it's not a matter of current poor tech.
Thank you, as always for your ear.
Amy
