Hello,

I am forwarding on the attached call for male research participants. I am
also pasting the call for participants below.

I have not yet participated in this research but have corresponded several
times with the researcher and am registered to be a participant myself. I
don't know about the final outcomes of the research but it sounds
interesting to me.

CALL FOR RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS

My name is Tara Fannon and I'm a third year doctoral student with the
Department of Political Science and Sociology at NUI, Galway, Ireland. I
live in Brooklyn New York and I'm getting ready to begin my fieldwork in and
around NYC and beyond!

My research entitled, Personal Narratives of Gender and Disability: Blind
and Visually Impaired Men's Accounts of Embodied Selfhood, qualitatively
investigates the relationship between gender, disability and visuality,
specifically how visual and textual representations of masculinities and
disability shape and are shaped by blind and visually impaired men's sensory
accounts of body and self. In other words, I'm interested in learning what
masculinity and disability means to my participants in their everyday lives
and, beyond this, what it's like having a visual disability in a time when
visual information, image and aesthetic are considered important in our
society.

I am currently recruiting males between the ages of 18-75 who are fluent
English speakers, permanent residents of the United States currently living
in the United States and who identify as visually impaired or blind (from
birth or acquired).

Participation in this research will entail one in-depth interview lasting up
to an hour and possibly one shorter follow-up interview. Interviews can be
conducted face-to-face with participants who live in the NYC area or over
the phone if preferred. Interviews with participants who live outside the
NYC area will take place only over phone because my travel to locations
outside NYC is not possible at this time.

Face-to-face interview locations will be agreed upon by the participant and
researcher and will take place in public spaces provided they are
accessible, suitably quiet to ensure a good recording, and private enough to
ensure participant comfort.

This research is anonymous and confidential.

While I'm unable to offer financial compensation for participation, if in
the case of face-to-face interviews, water and snacks will be provided.
Beyond this, there are multiple, worthwhile benefits to participating in
this research that range from exploring completely new areas to growing
important and under-researched areas.

If you're interested in participating or would just like to know more about
my research please email me a completed 'expression of interest' form (see
attached) to: T.FANNON3 at nuigalway.ie <mailto:T.FANNON3 at nuigalway.ie> and I
will be in touch shortly. Your returning this form doesn't obligate you to
participate in my research.

Finally, please feel free to pass this research call onto family, friends or
colleagues that might meet the criteria for my recruitment.

Warm regards,

Hi Dr. Bell,

I wouldn't mind you passing the information along before our interview, in
the interest in hopefully creating some momentum. I've attached the original
call and the expression of interest form.

As far as our interview, we can leave it until after October 12th. Generally
speaking Mondays between 8-1pm and Wednesdays and Fridays between 10-5pm are
a sure bet. I'm away on the 16th and I think you may be one hour behind me,
just a couple of things to consider.

Best,

Tara

Tara,

Yes, I am comfortable sharing with our wider community. I thought I would
wait until after my interview so that I can say to folks "I have
participated and it was a good experience" or whatever, but if it is more
important to get it out there I can share it now. If so, can you send me
another email that has the initial invitation? I think I have it saved but
if I can forward directly from you it might be better.

I am out of town October 7-9. Generally, I can be open most days. After
October 12 is pretty open for me rest of the month. So, let me know when in
that timeframe is good for you and I can double check my calendar.

Hi Dr. Bell,

Please find attached your copy of the Informed Consent, signed by me.

My thinking is to start my actual fieldwork in early October. To get an idea
of what your availability is, at your earliest convenience, can you provide
me with some general days/times that you think you'd be able to talk with me
over the phone for our main interview?

I can tell you that Tuesdays and Thursdays are tough for me because I teach.
Other than that I'm very flexible.

Additionally, now that you have a better idea of what my research is about
and the types of questions I'll be asking, do you think it's something
you're comfortable sharing with your wider community?

Best,

Tara

Third time is a charm? Attached.

FYI, being blind and unable to see the lines after each question it was not
clear that I needed to initial each item. It might be helpful to others to
clarify; where you have:

Please insert initials on the line provided:

To add:

Please insert your initials on the line provided after each item to mark
your consent with each statement:

Okay, I see what's happening. You have 'signed' the form but you have not
initialed the numbered statements. Can you do this, and then we're good to
go.

Best.

Hi Dr. Bell,

Yes you definitely qualify. An important objective of mine is to include a
range of diverse voices. I've attached your informed consent. Once you
return it to me, I'll forward you a signed copy and we can go from there.

Many thanks for your quick reply.

Best,

Tara

Hi Dr. Bell,

Thank you for returning you form. Please find attached a participant
information sheet that explains in more detail, my research. This sheet will
give you a better sense of the questions I might ask, or at least the
questions that are guiding my research. I'm, of course, happy to answer any
questions or address any concerns you might have after reading the form.

All the best,

Tara

Hi Tara,

Attached is my completed request form. I know of probably a dozen or so
other men who would fit this criteria (well actually more than a dozen). I
would be interested in either participating myself first and/or seeing the
nature of the questions before I could strongly recommend the study to
others.

Either way, I am glad to help where I can. See my responses and let me know.

I come to you by way of Buffa Hanse who I've never met but, in her receiving

and/or sharing it with other men who might meet my sample criteria.
