Ericka, thank you for sharing. Would you be able to participate if it were by phone or Facetime or some other communication by phone rather than computer? I hope it works out for you to attend one of the centers.

You are very right. There is no option in Wisconsin for one to one adult education. This is why I am trying to attend Blind Inc. Hadley did not serve my purposes and the real only solution in Wisconsin is requires good transportation skills back-and-forth to Milwaukee for anyone out of county. Classes are only once or twice a week. They do have some remote support but it is computer-based. If you do not have a good computer skills then this is not going to help.

I have asked Hadley to provide a copy of their materials so I can support them through the course but Hadley won’t do that. I understand they don’t want materials getting into everyone’s hands. I think Hadley is a wonderful option but I agree, in many situations additional support is needed.

Hadley is a wonderful resource. Unfortunately, it doesn't work for the majority of the people I have dealt with. Most of them need someone to assist them face to face or by telephone with completing the lessons and integrating concepts such as tracking across the line and inserting paper into the brailler or slate.

I currently assist a former student with completing Hadley courses by going to her house once a month. Due to her learning challenges, this is the only way she could successfully complete these courses. Rehabilition officials would probably say she should rely on audio and live readers to access information. She is determined to learn braille.

Thanks for the information about Hadley. This is not a solution for the people I am talking about.

Try Hadley School for the Blind in Winnetka Illinois. I have a client taking a braille course from them now. It is very thorough--spending the entire first course on tracking and finger movement. It's either free or very reasonably priced.

NFB of Ohio is looking into ways to provide braille instruction to adults who are losing vision. Our division of the blind is not as supportive of the need for braille as we would like. I would like to know about some inventive ideas for braille instruction. We are looking at virtual instruction for braille with local volunteers for support. That is just one idea but we are open to any other suggestions. We do not have any kind of rehabilitation center in OH so that is not an option. I am especially interested in providing instruction outside of our metropolitan areas.
