[Pibe-division] borrowing in subtraction problems with Nemeth code

Hi Marianne,
I also do not use the cancellation signs except when I am teaching them to read it. There is another method... if the number is 242-33 you give equal amounts to each number to make it easier to solve.
242+7-33+7= 249-40. Now it's very easy to solve. Send your adding the same number to both parts of the problem you are keeping the same distance between them on a number line. This works for some obviously it doesn't work for all.

Marianne,

We do not use cancellation marks unless a student cannot keep the information in their head.

Thanks,
Krystal

Yes, it is what I am asking. If the problem is 242 - 163 would you have them use the cancellation marks around the numbers that need to be changed? It just seems like so much work. I have been blind all of my life but did not learn or use Nemeth code in school.

Hi Marianne,
I typically only showed my students proper Nemeth code for borrowing so they could understand what is in the textbook. I never had them “cross out” anything using the proper Nemeth symbols when writing their problems. Is this what you are asking or am I missing the mark?
