I hope others will respond. I did change the line to better reflect this thread.

Your insight makes me feel a little bit better about pursuing the profession Marianne. I would like to hear other points of view. I'm not horrible at math, I just don't feel qualified to explain something but then again I've heard teacher say that they re-learn concepts as they assist students. So maybe I am worrying about nothing. English was always my strong point.

In theory, you don't teach math but you teach the student the skills needed to learn math. TVIs know we all step in and help teach concepts when a student is struggling. At least, that is what happens with me. I think you would need to know what borrowing is and when you would need to borrow. What do other TVIs think? I think the expectations of a TVI are a bit over the top.

What if you're a visually impaired person who's interested in going into the TBS field and has not had adequate math education and is just learning braille. I don't know if I could competently teach math and that is steering me away from my strong desire to teach. I'm older and this is has been a dream of mine, but I had no means to do it because I did not possess skills as a blind person.

I agree regarding the teaching of cancellation/regrouping indicators. They need to know how to read the same, but not necessarily use them. For students who have difficulty keeping numbers in their heads, one strategy that works for some is to use a manipulative (e.g., marble, small plastic block) as a reminder. It can be kept near them when engaging in addition/subtraction, and generally, students using this method do so less and less with practice. Braille Rocks!

Marianne,

We do not use cancellation marks unless a student cannot keep the information in their head.

Thanks,

Yes, it is what I am asking. If the problem is 242 - 163 would you have them use the cancellation marks around the numbers that need to be changed? It just seems like so much work. I have been blind all of my life but did not learn or use Nemeth code in school.

Hi Marianne,
I typically only showed my students proper Nemeth code for borrowing so they could understand what is in the textbook. I never had them “cross out” anything using the proper Nemeth symbols when writing their problems. Is this what you are asking or am I missing the mark?
