Job Title: Certified Teacher for the Visually Impaired

Reports to: Director, Special Populations Services

Dept.: Special Populations Services

Exemption Status: Exempt/Professional

Primary Purpose:
Provide diagnostic assessment and services to students with visual impairments as recommended by the ARD/IEP.  Develop and implement appropriate goals and objectives.  Coordinate with local campus special education and general education teachers regarding service delivery to students; including students served through ECI.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Master’s degree in Special Education or Counseling preferred
Valid Texas Special Education Teaching Certificate
Valid Vision Credentials from State Licensing Agency
Valid Certification as an Orientation Mobility Specialist preferred


Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of evaluation and ARD process, education of special education students, human development, and learning theories.
Advanced knowledge of and compliance with federal and state special education law.
Working knowledge of and compliance with individualized services for students with disabilities.
Advanced knowledge of and compliance with the expanded core curriculum.
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Strong computer skills to implement multiple and diverse programs.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Must have the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of students with disabilities, their parents, the community, peers, and administrative staff.
Must have the ability to effectively interpret policy, procedures, and student data.
Must have the ability to transition with district, campus, and/or department changes.
Must have ability to communicate effectively with and receive guidance from supervisors.
Must have ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
Must have ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
Must have ability to travel as necessary.
Three years teaching experience preferred.


Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Conduct required evaluation of students with visual impairments within timelines.



Collaborate with multidisciplinary team in completing evaluation and written report within timelines.



Develop appropriate IEP goals and objectives to present to ARD/IEP committee.



Collaborate with campus staff to schedule and attend ARD/IEP meetings within timelines.



Collaborate with campus staff to schedule instructional assistance for students with visual impairments.



Provide students with appropriate instruction following the IEP recommendations.



Assist student’s teachers on a regular schedule with issues regarding instructional strategies/techniques for students with visual impairments.



Ensure appropriate materials/technology are provided to students with visual impairments.



Ensure all students with VI are registered with TEA as appropriate.



Coordinate with ECI agencies for services to birth-2 visually impaired infant population.



Maintain complete inventory of materials and availability.



Conduct staff training as appropriate.



Assure state and district wide assessments are available in Braille or large print for students as needed.



Respond to inquiries from campus administration and special education staff.



Assist Special Education Director in keeping staff informed of professional trends and staff development opportunities that may affect assigned position/programs.



Provide special education director, campus administration and staff with a regular schedule for accountability purposes.
Maintain high degree of knowledge regarding compliance with federal and state rules and regulations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
