Robert, I sam not so familiar where acess
technology specialist are employed these days. however, I have a few
suggestions. Check these sites that list jobs on a national basis for blind
individuals l. 1. www.afb.org press enter job
listings. 2. www.spedex.com and press enter
on the link view jobs. I have read a few postings about need for access
technology specialists. Yyou should consider looking for manufactureresof
assistive technology in assisting with prproduct development. A listof all
manyufacturers of assistive technology is found at: www.afb.org under the publication access world. I
think you need to search for manufacturers and you'll be bgiven companies
you can contact. various may want to contact t the departmen tof
education and find out if the department that hires certified teachersof the
blind and visually impaired, certified orientation and mobility specialists also
hires assistive technology specialist. in my state, one must have a backgbground
in the use of assistive technology and know how to conduct an assistive
technology evaluation and recommend the appropriate assistive technology
for students who are blind or visually impaired. Certified teachersof the blind
and visually impaired can make their recommendations known to this department
and these teachers teach the students who are blind and visually impaired how to
use the assistive technology devices. These includes note takers for blind
students, teaching touch typing and jaws for blind users with the use of a
computer. Teaching visually impaired students how to use magnification software
on their computer. Blind students are also taught how to scan printed pages into
an opticcal character recognition software program, how to use duxbury braille
transla translate printed text that has ben scanned into a computer
with ocr program and translate the document tinto braille as well as how
tooperate a braille embosser.
