We qualify kids for Braille Instruction through critical point of instruction 1. This states that the child is at a critical stage in the general ed curriculum where ESYS would allow the student to maintain and/or achieve grade level expectations or maintain the level of services indicated in the regular IEP. Thus, your student is at a critical stage that would allow him to increase his knowledge, speed, comprehension, and fluency in braille so that he can use braille in the general ed classroom. <br /><address><font face="verdana,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" color="#ff0000"><strong>Kristen J. Sometimes the way things are worded can help it get through. An idea is something like:<br />Using Braille is an emerging literacy skill that is critical for access to and success in accessing literacy materials. A student needs to be able to read at a rate that is sufficient to acquire literacy skills. (you can site reading speeds and fluency rates from a source such as the Jerry Johns....) He is very very slow reading braille. His parents are requesting ESY to continue improving reading speed. The school is reluctant to provide ESY because he has not demonstrated significant loss in reading speed.
