the iPad? I used it with an early elementary student with microophthalmia (LP
only) and significant hypertonia. We started with a Yes/No program (free!), and
I placed sheet styrofoam packing material in the middle to give him a place to
rest his hand between answers. I affixed this hand rest to the iPad with Velcro
on the top and bottom so the iPad could easily be used by other students in the
classroom.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif">Now, this student had
significant hypertonia, so we moved to functional Braille quickly--via a piece
of Braille paper and a small board--one line of braille, only 18 cells long. I
did this to facilitate a move to the Refreshabraille 18. By the time my student
moved, he could choose the correct answer from two choices of 6 or 8 words
about 90% of the time, in addition to yes or no in response to a question.
Questions included: "What special did you just have?" "What's
coming up next?" We had also begun doing this with days of the week and
the month, but we did not get too far with this before he moved.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif">Had my student had
better motor control, I would have considered using a program like ProLoQuo2Go
and using graphic art tape to provide the structure on the iPad (which could be
followed with fingertips. However, this would not have worked for my student,
so I never pursued the idea. (Also, Guided Access might help in terms of
widening the area along which the student could follow the graphic art tape
without triggering a response accidentally.</span></p>

I just began working with an 9th grade student, 16 years old, who is<br>
nonverbal. I met him for the first time today but he appears to be<br>
very low functioning. I would like to explore an augmentative<br>
communication device to see if he can use it to communicate with<br>
people. His visual acuity is 20 200 or less but it is hard to know<br>
exactly what it is. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.<br>
I would like something that is portable. I am aware of the ones that<br>
you create with real objects.<br>
