The problem is anything she comes into contact with she tends to tear. I got great suggestions about using permabraille paper, but I also want to teach her methods for not breaking things. Hi,<br>
I wanted to reach out and get some suggestions on a student. This student<br>
is in kindergarten and is a braille reader, almost completely blind. She<br>
has a braille alphabet on her desk and other manipulative in the classroom.<br>
We are running up against the problem that she end ups tearing everything<br>
she comes into contact with. This becomes hard to create things for her or<br>

She is probably resisting it because she can't understand what she is<br>
doing and the purpose of it. I think it would help if you design some<br>
learning games for her, so she can get to enjoy them before she gets<br>
into the braille alphabet. Even sighted children at that age don't get<br>
engaged in alphabet learning most of the time, so maybe she needs a<br>
different kind of stimulous. As for taring things apart, just get her<br>
something that she can't tare apart and play with it.<br>

Is she likely to be an academic or more of a functional learner? If she is academic, there are a variety of positive behavior supports that can be included to keep the paper on the desk. If she is needing Braille for self-help/functional goals, I would start with words (like her name) to start with. Aph has some pre-made object stickers. Putting labels on objects gives concrete meaning to the Braille. Plus I challenge her to tear up the door! Lol<br>

Does your student understand the purpose of braille - That it carries a message? What sort of role modelling is she getting? Have you tried using hand-under-hand (hers on yours) while you read her a story (even if you are actually reading from the print, run your fingers over the braille using good technique).<br>

What does she like doing? Treasure hunts? Family corner? I?d just make braille everywhere, like on the toy stove, above the coat hooks, by all the classroom resources?<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
You could try other fine tactile activities ? I like filling a container with uncooked rice or beans and hiding small pieces of candy in it for the student to find (and then eat as the reward); or threading small beads of different shapes onto a string to make a necklace; creating things with wiki-stix, play-dough, etc.<br>

Teach the braille symbols using an egg box, muffin pan or marble block/swing cell. Let her organise the balls, and you copy (and tell her what she?s made), then get her to imitate what you make, starting with the first letter of her first name.<br>

I have a student who picks off braille labels and picks at piaf images. We made her a ?picking board? ? a piece of cardboard with lots of little things glued to it, that she is allowed to pick off, if she feels the urge to pick! She gets rewarded at the end of the day if certain ?precious? things are still intact.<br>
