I will never speak up against any efforts that any organization puts forth
regarding the hybrid car, especially, when it pertains to safety.  All of us
needs to be aware of our surroundings, be we dog handlers, cane travelers,
or just walking with others.  

I think that an awareness of issues is great, but, I think that a lot of
people jump on the band wagon without knowing how hybrids work, the
logistics of the situation and I believe that we all ought to make ourselves
aware of travel skills and just not force blame on hybrids, hybrid owners
and the industry.  I know that this is not what most people want to hear,
but as a dog handler for nearly 35 years, and a cane traveler since seven
grade, I feel it is incumbent upon us to take responsibility for our actions
and lobby for change as we are able, using the tools we have, like the media
and our organizations to keep up on issues that make our participation
necessary in these endeavors.  As many of the guide dog schools have chosen
to add hybrid cars to their fleets of training vehicles, so should mobility
specialists and state agencies make the connection to obtain use of hybrid
 vehicles wherever and however they can.  Passing legislation is a fantastic
thing, but responsibility to the constituents doesn't stop at the
legislative end.
