            Dear Friend,

Welcome to "Extra," Easter Seals Project ACTION's monthly online newsletter. This is the June 2010 edition.

Online course for new ADA paratransit managers starts in July
Registrations are being accepted for ESPA's 10-week course Excellence in Service for Paratransit Managers. Designed primarily for new ADA complementary paratransit managers, the course will run from July 19 - September 24. The course covers the history of the disability movement, provides ideas for engaging the disability community in your area, and explores problem-solving techniques and effective communication skills. The course is flexible enough to allow managers to log in and work at any hour. Course participation requirements and online application information are available at the ESPA Web site. Sign up soon-enrollment is limited! Registration deadline: June 28.

Registration is now open for Forming Partnerships with Transit course
ESPA is offering an online course August 2 - September 10 for transit advocates interested in increasing their role in the planning, design, and implementation of community transit service. Human services providers involved in local coordinated planning efforts and private transportation providers also may find this course useful. The course covers: transportation planning, transportation funding, becoming a transit supporter, and strategies for taking on an effective role in supporting transit. Registration deadline: July 23.

Coming soon - July paratransit online dialogue
Easter Seals Project ACTION will host a two-week, online event during which transportation providers, disability services providers, and human services professionals from across the country will have the opportunity to discuss ADA complementary paratransit, human services paratransit, aging services paratransit, accessible taxi service, and volunteer driver programs. Many transportation providers are experiencing challenges and seeking flexible ways to accommodate customers in a time of tight budgets and service cuts. The dialogue takes place July 26 - August 6. Join us next month to share your experiences, paratransit practices, challenges, and recommendations! Registration for this event will open in July.

Travel instruction conference set for August in Baltimore
The 10th Annual Association of Travel Instruction Continuing Education Conference will be held August 13-15 at the Sheraton Baltimore City Center Hotel in Baltimore, Md. Presentation sessions will focus on a variety of topics of interest to travel trainers and travel training program managers. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about hiring and training new travel trainers, budgeting for and managing a travel training program, and partnering with the local transit authority to achieve positive outcomes. Additional sessions will address travel training for high school students, teaching safe street crossing, and competencies for primary and secondary route training for students in transition programs. Advance and in-person registration is available. Registration and hotel information is available online. Hotel reservation deadline: August 5.

Applications being accepted for 2010 Livable Communities Awards
AARP and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) are accepting applications for the 2010 Livable Communities Awards from forward thinking builders, remodelers, developers, and architects whose designs and projects resulted in attractive, comfortable, and safe homes and communities for people of all ages. Entry forms are available at the NAHB Web site, and AARP's site features videos of last year's winning projects. Applications for the 2010 awards are due July 16. Winning projects will be honored at the January 2011 International Builders Show in Orlando, Fla.

Federal guide identifies funding resources for community livability projects
The federal Partnership for Sustainable Communities, formed by U.S. Department of Transportation, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Environmental Protection Agency, has released a guide to federal funding programs that support sustainable living and accessibility. Leveraging the Partnership identifies transit, highways, bicycle and pedestrian, and rail grant programs that support community development. HUD programs fund housing, tribal, and community planning. EPA grants focus on brownfields re-use, water quality and energy conservation, and green infrastructure. Resources in the guide include links to detailed information and requirements for all grant programs and contact information for regional and headquarters offices for the three federal agencies.
