Gabe,

It really gripes me when guys like you come on one of our listservs
and bitch about the NFB. The NFB put its time, effort, and resources to
develop, over a span of several years, the KNFB reader, a completely
portable reading machine that didn't exist before. It is the latest version
of the Kurzweil reading machine, whose development the NFB supported
financially in the early 1970's, when Ray Kurzweil was a virtual unknown.
It has systematically improved the KNFB reader, and continued to lower its
price. Tell me the name of any other technology provider in the field of
work with the blind (with the possible exception of Serotek) that has done
that.
It has even developed low interest loans to permit blind people to
buy the assistive technology they need. But the NFB is not a welfare agency
- for techies or for anyone else. It is able to do what it does partly
because of the money many of us have put into it. Doing a rough accounting,
I figure my wife and I have put around $35,000.00 into its Pre-Authorized
Check (PAC) plan throughout our lifetimes. How about you?

And what does this have to do with the nfb not making the nfb reader
available to normal blind citizens with low incomes? What have they really
done you tell me.
