About the Position: : The position is located at Walter Reed Army
Medical Center, residual community in Northwest Washington, DC. There
is easy accessibility to public transportation.
This is a term position, the initial appointment will be for 13 months,
and may be extended up until the BRAC Closure date of 9/15/2011.
This position will be filled at the Medical Treatment Facility noted
above but may be transferred to the Community Hospital at Ft. Belvoir
in 2011. The duties of the position will remain as advertised, but the
duty
location may change in order for the Hospital to meet mission needs.

As an Assistive Technology Specialist, you will manage care for
patients by providing training in Assistive Technology (AT), AT devices
or equipment and teaching skills of daily living towards the goal of
rehabilitation. You will create, modify and/or adapt assistive
technological devices such as: Alternative keyboards, Screen readers,
screen enlargers, to patient use, by conducting patient evaluations and
recommending appropriate assistive technological tools/devices. You
will assist therapists in acquiring AT devices for patients which
include: individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic
stress disorder (PTSD), amputations (of any extremity or hand/digits),
or cognitive or visually impaired patients. You will periodically
conduct research on the most current assistive technology developments
and the utilization of a wide variety of unique therapeutic activities
designed to foster independence and resumption of occupational roles.

Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with
knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of this position,
such as: Professional knowledge of assistive technology requiring
extended training and experience in the concepts, principles,
techniques and practices of implementation of assistive technology to
achieve the rehabilitation goals of patients with a variety of physical
and cognitive disabilities. Ability to perform advanced techniques
requiring in depth knowledge in such areas as cognitive rehabilitation,
assistive and/or adaptive technologies for visual deficits, auditory
deficits, dexterity impairments, etc. Ability to apply new scientific
or technological procedures in the treatment of problems not usually
seen in traditional occupational therapy settings or school settings.
Ability to plan and carry out complex long and short treatment programs
utilizing a wide variety of unique therapeutic activities designed to
foster independence and resumption of an occupational roles. Ability to
perform evaluations of patients' need for assistive technologies in the
areas of cognitive, perceptual motor, activities of daily living,
neuromuscular, musculoskeletal and developmental processes, work
performance; and to devise adaptations of programs to meet specific
needs of patients. Skill in oral communication such that the incumbent
can perform hands-on education of new technologies effectively to
patients as well as teaching concepts and providing briefings to staff
and patients.
The experience described in your resume will be evaluated and

requirements, and the skills needed to perform the duties of this

Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the
last 52 weeks must meet the Time in Grade Restriction.
One year of experience in the same or similar work equivalent to at
least the next lower grade or level requiring application of the
knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position being filled.
GS-11: Bachelor's degree directly related to this occupation and 1
year of experience directly related to this occupation equivalent to
the next lower grade level, or 3 years of progressively higher level
graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent
doctoral degree.
