RJ, a Social Security card and valid ID are required to work.
Ensuring you have these pieces of information shows that you are
serious about going to work and will not hold up the hiring process
when it comes. Also, providing a copy of your Social security card
assists when verifying SS#'s, which at least we in TN are required to
do. A person's SS benefit information is not available immediately to
the VRC; therefore, bringing a copy of the award letter assists in
determining a presumed eligibility right away unless the person
exhibits some type of behavior or limitation that would indicate to
the VRC that the applicant might not be able to benefit from services
in which case an extended evaluation or additional
medical/psychological records are requested to make an appropriate
eligibility decision. True, the SS benefit info is usually available
within a few days, but when so many of our rehab agencies are
operating in an order of selecttion a few days can make the difference
in being served immediately or in which release a person on a waiting
list is served. We in IL do not ask for all of this info because we
are not concerned with work. You do not need a valid ID or Social
Security card to improve your independent living skills. I worked as
a VRC for nine years and have worked as an IL instructor for almost
two. I have provided this information to you based on my knowledge,
training, and procedures we use in TN. In other words, this is the
rehab world according to Lucy and her experience, not necessarily the
way it might be in your area.

HTH and cheers!
Lucy
