[rehab] question about a blind studet taking college math

Hi Grace,

I have one suggestion, although it may seem a tad bit unconventional, and
that is to teach her to use a live reader.

I am a braille reader myself, but never learned Nymith code very well, and
text books were difficult to come by in any course. Not to mention that in
statistics I had to deal with complicated formuli and multiple rows and
columns of data--which is rather tricky in braille. So, I learned to use a
live reader, and when I was working on my doctorate I hired a reader who was
getting a degree in Statistics, so that we would both understand the Greek
symbols, and could communicate concepts effectively. I got all of my work
done, did several high-level statistics courses, and even learned a thing or
two about the math concepts quicker, cheaper, and more efficiently than I
could have with only braille.

Now, of course I took notes in braille, and used braille constantly, but for
access to the printed material and for writing out my homework and test
assignments, I found the reader to be quite effective.
Hope this helps,

Edward C. Bell, Ph.D., CRC, NOMC
