Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion
Position Description
Ohio University invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion. This senior position will serve as the chief diversity officer of the Athens and regional campuses and will report to the Executive Vice President and Provost. She/he will be a member of the Executive Vice President and Provost's senior administrative team.
The individual selected for this position will have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to a major public university that has been successful in recent years in deepening its commitment to diversity on its campuses and in the communities that surround them. Of increasing importance at Ohio University is the alignment of our diversity efforts with our global education outreach efforts. The university's strategic plan places diversity efforts in a prominent position by insisting that students who graduate from Ohio University are globally fluent and capable of being successful citizens in an increasingly multicultural society.

To that end, the university is strongly committed to academic excellence and views diversity and inclusiveness as being essential to its success in providing outstanding academic experiences that equip students for life.
The Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion has an important role in helping the university to realize its vision. She/he will lead efforts to encourage all members of the university community to develop an abiding respect for human dignity and difference as manifested through race, ethnicity, gender, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, or disability.
Responsibilities:
1. Lead and direct the units and centers that offer diversity programs: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Center, Multicultural Center and Programs, Office of Multicultural Student Access and Retention, and the Women's Center.
2. Advise and collaborate with the President, Executive Staff, Academic Deans, Directors, and leadership groups regarding the development and implementation of initiatives designed to support the university's diversity efforts.
3. Create a strong partnership with the Associate Provost for Faculty and Academic Planning to advance the university's efforts to recruit and retain diverse faculty.
4. Continue and enhance efforts to provide university-wide diversity training opportunities.
5. Continue and enhance current approaches to expand diversity efforts on the regional campuses.
6. Establish and maintain relationships between the university community and underserved populations throughout the state of Ohio and the nation to advance diversity initiatives and expand access opportunities within higher education.
7. Work closely with Institutional Equity, Human Resources, and Legal Affairs to foster an inclusive, discrimination/ harassment-free environment for the university community.
8. Actively solicit and manage new funding to support diversity initiatives.
9. Provide strategic assistance to the Office of Enrollment Management and the Graduate College in recruiting and attracting diverse students.
10. Collaborate with academic units in developing initiatives to assist with the retention of underrepresented students.
11. Assist academic units that seek to diversify their curriculum and conduct educational research related to diversity.
Qualifications:
- Terminal degree, extensive experience in the field of diversity, and the ability to translate expertise into highly effective practical applications are required.
- Track record of an entrepreneurial approach to program development and the establishment of dynamic relationships with students, faculty, university staff, corporations, government officials, foundations, and community leaders.
- Proven experience in meeting the specific needs of populations chronically underrepresented in higher education.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
- Exemplary interpersonal communication skills.
- Supervisory experience.
- Evidence of a commitment to a team-oriented approach to resolving issues.
- An understanding of the current economic climate facing public higher education and experience in working with budgetary challenges.
- Record of effective community service/outreach and promotion of social justice initiatives.
