Disability and Safeguards Campaign Program Associate
Job description
The Bank Information Center (BIC) partners with civil society in developing and transition countries to influence the World Bank and other international financial institutions (IFIs) to promote social and economic justice and ecological sustainability. BIC is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization that advocates for the protection of rights, participation, transparency, and public accountability in the governance and operations of the World Bank Group and other IFIs.
The Lebanese Physical Handicapped Union (LPHU) is a grassroots disability advocacy organization based in Lebanon that aims to ensure that persons with disabilities are included and integrated as active and equal participants in Lebanese society.
BIC and LPHU are looking for an experienced and passionate individual with strong advocacy and communication skills and a background in civil society to assist in a global campaign to ensure that the World Bank adopts a systematically inclusive approach for its engagement in developing countries. Specifically the campaign aims to integrate disability rights standards into the World Bank's social and environmental "safeguard" policies that govern its activities in developing countries.
The Associate will be based in BIC's Washington, DC office; will work closely with the different regional programs at BIC and its safeguards team, as well as with LPHU's Campaign Coordinator; and will serve as the liaison between LPHU and BIC on matters related to this campaign.
Principal Responsibilities
1) Advocacy and Campaigning:
- Assist in coordinating campaign-related advocacy activities
- Assist in identifying and adapting case studies on inclusive development to be used in the campaign's advocacy work
- Research and analyze topics and issues related to disability and World Bank Safeguards
2) Communication and Outreach:
- Assist LPHU's Campaign Coordinator in reaching out to disability organizations in the different regions and in preparing training materials
- Draft letters, articles and other campaign-related materials
- Assist the campaign coordinator in knowledge management activities
- Develop and administer the campaign's webpage materials
- Assist in developing and coordinating media outreach activities
3) Logistics and Management:
- Organize/participate in disability caucus calls
- Organize/participate in meetings with World Bank staff and partner organizations
- Coordinate with BIC's different regional programs and safeguards team, and with the LPHU Campaign Coordinator on different campaign related activities
- Attend campaign related meetings, conferences and events
Qualifications
- Masters-level degree in a relevant discipline
- Minimum of two to five years experience in working or campaigning with international, civil society and/or disabled peoples organizations
- Experience in campaigning essential and background in disability preferred
- Excellent spoken and written English language skills, second language is a plus
- Excellent writing and editing skills
- Skilled in the use of media especially new media
- Ability to take initiative and be proactive
- Ability to conduct independent research using a variety of sources
- Ability to work without supervision or as part of a team
- Knowledge on the World Bank preferred
- Commitment to economic, environmental and social justice, and inclusive development
