A. Mainstreaming Structured Discovery: Beyond Cane Travel; Across the Life-Space and Life-Span. Moderator, Maurice Peret, Instructor, Blindness Industries and Services of Maryland, Baltimore. Focus: While the term “Structured Discovery” was originally coined to describe the consumer approach to cane travel, its proponents advocate its use across education and rehabilitation settings for use with children, adults and seniors. This discussion forum will explore Structured Discovery beyond the bounds of cane travel.
Location: Ming Room, Tower Mezzanine
B. Hands-On: Finding Your Way: GPS101 for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Jamie Murdy & Katie Gilmore, Sendero Group, Roseville, CA. Focus: This will be a hands-on demonstration of the use of GPS as a navigational aid for blind pedestrians, an opportunity to dispel myths, and a chance to experience this technology in real-time.
Location: Participants will meet inside the Chantilly Entrance to the hotel, on the Tower Lobby side.
C. Hands-On: Quiet Cars: Facts versus Fiction. Joleen Kinzer, Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center, Austin, TX.
Focus: Much debate has raged regarding the inherent danger of quiet cars for blind pedestrians, yet many consumers have not had experience with quiet cars, the pros, cons, or the opportunities to identify strategies and tips for facing these navigation challenges. This hands-on opportunity involves exposure to a quiet car in operation.
Location: Participants will meet outside the Atrium Lobby entrance.
D. Working Outside the Box: Exhibit and Career Fair. Focus: Come mix and mingle and learn about all sorts of jobs being performed by blind people.
Location: Milan Room, Tower Mezzanine

A. Publication of the National Reading Media Assessment (NRMA), Final Report. Dr. Jessica Ewell, Project Coordinator, Affiliate Action, National Federation of the Blind, Baltimore, MD. Focus: Come learn about the NRMA as a reliable and validated measure for correctly identifying the reading needs of visually impaired youth across the country and how this tool may work to change education and rehabilitation policy with respect to primary reading media.
