*Job Description:*



This position exists to supervise, monitor, evaluate and continually
improve the Braille Section of the Communication Center of the State
Services for the Blind Office in St. Paul, Minnesota. Primary
responsibilities include supervising the staff and volunteers of the
Section; supervising and monitoring new print to braille transcriptions,
supervising and monitoring client requests for copies of items in our
library or available from out-of-state sources; developing and monitoring a
computerized braille production system; interpreting and applying of all
Braille Authority of North America code standards at the local level until
transition to Unified English Braille; Learning, training and transitioning
to Unified English Braille; serving as an expert in the areas of braille
matters and blindness, promoting the continued use and development of
braille for blind, visually and print impaired readers statewide; and
approving all braille unit expenditures and monitoring fiscal resources
allocated to the Braille Section.

Job Duties include:

1. Supervise assigned staff and to manage a volunteer services program for
the Braille Section so that clients of the section receive prompt services
and necessary support.
2. Supervise and monitor the inkprint-to-braille transcription of all books
not currently part of the braille library, taking into consideration the
wide array of technology available to do this so that Minnesota clients
receive braille that is accurate in content and form, produced in a timely
manner and transcribed using the most cost effective methods.
3. Direct and monitor client requests for braille books currently available
in our library and those available from out-of-state sources; to supervise
the thermoforming, computer duplication, distribution and cataloging of
such books so that the collection of braille books in our library is
available and easily accessible to blind, visually and print impaired
readers in Minnesota and throughout the country.
4. Develop, supervise, evaluate and monitor an automated braille production
system so that a significant portion of the needed braille is produced by
computer quickly and accurately for Minnesota residents.
5. Supervise the interpretation and to direct the application of all
national braille rules and regulations at the local level so that
Minnesota's braille transcriptions conform to national regulations and
blind, visually and print impaired readers receive high quality braille
materials.
6. To develop and monitor the budget of the Braille Section.

*Minimum Qualifications:*



Certification in Braille Transcription through the National Library
Service, Washington D.C.

Two (2) years of demonstrated experience applying the ever-changing rules
of braille transcription as promulgated by The Braille Authority
of North America.

Working knowledge of the methods used in producing tactile graphics.

Knowledge of Braille Formats for textbooks.

Knowledge of the software for direct input, translation and back
translation of braille and the best application of each.

Must have the ability to operate and troubleshoot computers, braille
embossers, optical scanners, bursting equipment, and other hardware
used in braille production.

Writing skills sufficient to develop staff manual materials, policy
formulations, annual reports and grant applications. NOTE: You will be
evaluated on your written communication skills based on the overall content
and clarity of your application materials.

Effective communications skills in working with staff, consumers, and
providers of services.

Presentation skills sufficient to make presentations to public
organizations, schools, rehabilitations centers, etc.
