*Job Description:*
There are up to twelve (12) vacancies. Qualified applicants will be
considered for all vacancies.
Disability Determination Services (DDS) evaluates claims for disability
benefits using Social Security Administration guidelines. The social
security program provides a service for a client population in need of
monetary and medical assistance. Disability Examiners investigate and
adjudicate initial Social Security and Supplemental Security Income
disability claims using Social Security laws, regulations, and policies.
These jobs provide an opportunity to work with a team of professionals

The mandatory training class is anticipated to start in June, 2015. Exact
date to be determined. During the twelve (12) weeks of training, hours are
set at 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Attendance is mandatory.
Examiners are required to:
- Obtain medical and vocational documentation, via mail, phone and computer
software systems.
- Read, annotate, and summarize medical records using medical terminology,
and resolve conflicts within records; prepare written reports of findings.
- Analyze medical assessments and vocational documentation.
- Interact on a professional level with clients, third parties, medical
record departments, coworkers, and medical consultants.
- Independently maintain a high-volume workload while complying with agency
standards for production, quality, and processing time.
- Ability to adjust to frequent changes in policy and procedures.
- Use a personal computer and two monitors continuously during a eight (8)
hour work day.
- Be capable of working in multiple software systems simultaneously.
Examiners receive training on critical components of the position,
including: knowledge of data privacy, medical aspects of disability
evaluation, medical terminology, disease processes and treatments, and
functional limitations. Examiners develop knowledge of Social Security law,
regulations, rulings, policies, and procedures that apply to adjudication
of disability claims.
*Minimum Qualifications:*
Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Arts, Education, Humanities, Communications,
Sciences including social and behavioral, or related areas
OR
Two (2) years of professional work experience in medical claims
adjudication in the health insurance industry, medical practice or allied
fields.
Qualifications established by experience and/or post-secondary education
should demonstrate:
- High level reading comprehension ability in order to understand, apply
and interpret laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures. A
significant amount of time is spent reading complex information.
-Written communication skills sufficient to write clearly and organize
material logically for inclusion in correspondence and documentation of
decisions. Must be able to write clear and concise summaries of information
gathered. NOTE: your written communication skills are initially evaluated
based on the overall content and clarity of your application materials.
-Decision making skills sufficient to make accurate and sound
determinations on eligibility in accordance with laws, rules, regulations,
policies and procedures.
-Problem solving and analytical skills sufficient to identify and resolve
discrepancies in an applicant's claim.
--English sufficient to communicate clearly and accurately and the ability
to give clear and concise explanations when speaking.
-Ability to organize and prioritize work, including case files. Must be
able to multi-task in dealing with multiple cases at one time.
-Ability to work on the computer for up to eight (8)hours a day.
-Fast and accurate keyboarding skills.
-Proficiency in computer use sufficient to adapt to frequent specialized
software updates, navigate and read electronic medical records, manage
multiple screens, utilize the internet to research issues, and use various
office software (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel), email programs (e.g.
Outlook), and other database applications.
Note: if invited for an in-house interview, there will be additional tests
in computer proficiency (e.g., navigation, typing), reading comprehension
and written communications.
*Preferred Qualifications:*
Bachelor's degree in one of the fields listed above.
Knowledge of medical terminology and medical assessments.
*Selection Process:*

include a review of documentation related to job performance. It includes
contact with the applicant's former employers.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT
Individuals selected for positions with the Minnesota Disability
Determination Service (DDS) will go through a complete federal background
investigation. A suitability determination by the Social Security
Administration is necessary to determine whether an employee can be issued
credentials in order to have access to Social Security disability data,
records, and systems. Finalists must pass a preliminary check prior to a
job offer being made. A full background investigation will follow. Further
details will be provided during the interview process.
When the position requires travel and the applicant drives a state owned or
leased vehicle, a driver's license and record check will be conducted.
