Student Life Disability Services is a department that provides academic
support services for OSU students with disabilities. The Braille
Transcriber is responsible for producing, coordinating, and delivering
appropriate braille and tactile image services; transcribes and embosses a
broad range of course materials (e.g. textbooks, notes, slides, homework,
articles, exams) into Literary and Mathematics Braille, as well as produces
associated tactile images; provides training/information and direction to
student employee, production staff and additional service providers;
self-directs in terms of time management, prioritization of work duties and
appropriate responses to constantly evolving concerns and situations, and
exhibits great attention to detail; keeps current with all new changes and
developments in the field of higher education as applicable to functions
assigned, with an emphasis in braille and tactile image production.
*Required:* Bachelor’s degree from an accredited post-secondary
institution; Library of Congress certification in Literary Braille
Transcribing and Proofreading; Library of Congress certification in
Mathematics Braille Transcribing and Proofreading (Nemeth Code and Science
Notation); 1 to 2 years’ experience creating and troubleshooting accurate
accessible electronic text, tactile materials, and braille (Literary and
Mathematics).
*Desired*: Significant experience producing accurate Literary and
Mathematics Braille documents and associated tactile images at the
undergraduate and/or graduate level in advanced STEM subjects, including
but not limited to math, economics, statistics, and chemistry, as well as
Foreign Languages; experience in transcribing Unified English Braille
(UEB); certification in Orientation and Mobility; strong written and verbal
communication skills.
