Hi Everyone,

With all the fuss about identity theft, few people carry Social Security
Cards with them anymore. In fact, many cards are locked up for
safekeeping. This can prove a problem when you are starting a job if you
don’t remember to have your card with you. Employers have to fill out an
I-9 on each person they hire. Copies are not permissible, so you must show
them your actual Social Security Card, along with some form of picture ID,
usually a state ID. You must show both documents to them within your first
three days of employment, or they must terminate you and have you go
through the application process all over again. So if you lost your Social
Security card, now is the time to get a replacement one. What happens if
you can’t get one in time? You can give the employer the letter from
Social Security showing you applied for a new card. That will give you 120
days to get the card to them. Or you can give the employer a valid U.S.
Passport instead. For non-citizens, a green card will usually suffice.
The link to I-9 information is: https://www.uscis.gov/i-9 if you want to
learn more about it.
