Do you want to make a meaningful difference this summer by positively changing the lives of blind teenagers? The Iowa Department for the Blind is accepting applications for our 2016 summer youth counselor positions. We are looking for positive blind role models who are able to facilitate a fun and positive living experience for students. Applicants are expected to teach/supplement teaching  alternative/nonvisual techniques of blindness, have good verbal and written communication skills, and enjoy working with high school students.

Summer counselors must be available from May 31-August 11, 2016. Applications are due by April 7.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Starting hourly salary is expected to be $15.49

A temporary Summer Youth Counselor will support the mission, vision and philosophy of the Iowa Department for the Blind. This position will serve the IDB Vocational Rehabilitation Transition Program.


DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


1.      Embrace and facilitate the Department’s philosophy of blindness.

2.      Facilitate a fun and positive living environment where students can come to understand that blindness is not a barrier to leading a full and active life.

3.      Supplement instruction to students in the alternative/nonvisual techniques of blindness such as cane travel, home management, assistive technology, and Braille. (I.e. travel to/from classes, prepare meals, etc.)

4.      Assess, identify, and evaluate students’ skills to establish goals.

5.      Assure the safety of summer program participants

6.      Participate in the planning and implementation of recreational activities, including physical fitness activities during evenings and weekends.

7.      Communicate concerns and identify solutions to issues.

8.      Ability to work alone or in a team environment.

9.      Ability to write clear and concise reports regarding students’ progress.

Position specifications:

1.      Knowledge of alternative/nonvisual techniques of blindness (Braille, assistive technology, cane travel, and home management).

2.      Basic knowledge of structured discovery teaching methods.

3.      Effective verbal and written communication skills using the English language.
