*A temporary Summer Youth Counselor will support the mission, vision and
philosophy of the Iowa Department for the Blind. Counselors will mentor
high school students during IDB's eight-week residential summer program.*
*DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:*

*Embrace and facilitate the Department's philosophy of blindness.*

*Facilitate a fun and positive living environment where students can come
to understand that blindness is not a barrier to leading a full and active
life.*

*Supplement instruction to students in the alternative/nonvisual techniques
of blindness such as cane travel, home management, assistive technology,
and Braille. (I.e. plan and prepare meals, complete homework, manage
personal items and living environment, participate in activities, etc.)*

*Participate in the planning and implementation of supplemental activities
during evenings and weekends.*

*Assess, identify, and evaluate students' skills to establish goals.*

*Assure the safety of summer program participants*

*Communicate concerns and identify solutions to issues.*

*Ability to work alone or in a team environment.*

*Ability to write clear and concise reports regarding students' progress.*
*Position specifications:*

*Knowledge of alternative/nonvisual techniques of blindness (Braille,
assistive technology, cane travel, and home management).*

*Knowledge of structured discovery teaching methods.*

*Effective verbal and written communication skills using the English
language.*

*Work Schedule: May 30 - August 10, 2017*

*It is the policy of the Department for the Blind to conduct background
checks on all finalist candidates prior to any offer of
