Job Description
This is a non-merit position with the Iowa Department for the Blind.
The Department for the Blind (IDB) is seeking applicants for the position of
Senior Services Specialist for the Blind 1/Jobs/Life Skills instructor in
the Adult Comprehensive Adjustment to Blindness Training Center. This
person provides small group instruction in nonvisual skills using the
structured discovery model. This instructor will teach students in the
Center life skills such as personal care, budgeting, and alternative
blindness techniques to successfully live independently. In addition, this
person would work with students to find a career goal, facilitate skill and
interest preferences, and actively work with students to discuss alternative
non-visual techniques the student could use to perform work tasks.
We are looking for someone who will participate fully in center activities
and challenge students to grow and reach their fullest potential. Our
programs are based on a positive attitude toward blindness and a belief in
the normality and competency of blind people. We know that with proper
training and opportunity, blind people can live full, happy, and successful
lives.
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
* Provide individualized, nonvisual instruction to adults in using
the structured discovery model of training.
* Provide instruction to several students in a small group format.
* work with students on how to find housing, perform labor market
research, enroll in college, complete a FAFSA, write a resume and cover
letter, and other related tasks
* work with rehab counselors and businesses to set up informational
interviewing and job shadowing experiences for students
* teach non-visual strategies for self-care , money management,
personal organization, time management, maintaining a professional
appearance, and other daily living tasks
* Demonstrate and promote a positive attitude toward blindness
amongst center students.
* Evaluate student progress, set goals, and write progress reports
within the case management system.
* Participate fully in all center activities.
The ideal candidate will:
* Have experience working in an orientation center with both
teenagers and adults
* be flexible, patient, and enjoy change and variety in day-to-day
activities
* Have experience working with students who have varying levels of
skill and experience and manage a class of up to four students
* Possess a passion for teaching
* Possess a passion for empowering blind people to gain employment
* Be skilled at working as part of a team
* Have experience in a variety of employment fields
* Have excellent communication skills
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in human
service-oriented sciences, education, marketing or business and experience
equal to three years of full time professional work;
OR
the equivalent of three years of full-time experience as a rehabilitation
counselor or teacher shall be considered as qualifying provided the employee
has successfully completed training to meet the certification criteria
established by the agency;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting the
equivalent of one year of full-time professional work experience for each
year of the required education to a maximum substitution of four years.
