Dear Jobs and Rehab List Members:

After I sent this out, an individual sent an email to Kristy, Terry
Spitzmiller’s assistant, saying he wanted to apply for all the jobs listed
on the position descriptions. That is not the way to apply for a federal
or any other kind of job. I hope that individual is coming to the NFB
Convention and planning to attend our Job Seeker and Upward Mobility
Seminars. Basically, applying for a job involves sending a carefully
crafted resume and cover letter that shows clearly why you would be the
best choice for the job. We will show you how to do that in our Job Seeker
Seminar and breakout sessions. Federal jobs require an even more complex
process, but it is well worth the trouble.

I sent you all a number of federal position descriptions (attached) Each
position has a specific number on it. You need to use that number to apply
for that specific job on USA Jobs. You will also note that each
description is quite detailed, and shows what percentage of your time will
be dedicated to each job function. There is also a factor rating system
that will be used to evaluate your competencies for the job.

If you have read the position description over and it doesn’t resemble
anything you know how to do, don’t apply, as it would just be a waste of
time. At least weekly, I post openings from TAD PGS (Adeccona), which can
help you get a temporary job leading to employment in the federal
government. Ben and Sarah Marich are very helpful and well worth a call.

So, to apply for the above positions, go to: https://www.usajobs.gov.
Before that, go to the EEOC site, which provides advice for people with
disabilities:
https://www.eeoc.gov/eeoc/publications/applicants_with_disabilities.cfm.
Study the information on both sites, and learn how the system works. Then
apply for the above jobs if you are qualified. If you are stumped about
something, have questions, or need further information, I am sure Terry and
his staff would be willing to help you. But they cannot take your
application. The system doesn’t work that way.

I hope this clears everything up.

Best wishes,

Dick Davis, Chair
NFB Employment Committee

Dear Jobs and Rehab List Members:

Unfortunately, Terry Spitzmiller of the Veterans Health Administration is
not able to attend our career fair this year because of schedule
conflicts. He has some very excellent contracting jobs available that pay
quite well.

As is the case with the federal government, the starting salary is based on
the region in which a person lives, which means if you live in a place with
high living costs, you will get paid more. Many positions start at GS-9,
but some are GS-11, depending on qualifications.

I have talked to Terry and referred one blind person to him. His staff
worked very hard to make employment possible, but the individual ultimately
decided he didn’t want the job. Terry is a great guy and really wants to
hire blind people! I am hoping that some of you will apply and qualify for
their positions. Terry’s district covers the entire central part of the
U.S.

If you have questions, please address them to Terry, Lora, or Kristy, whose
emails are below. John Dubay is on our Employment Committee and cannot
answer any questions about the positions.

Best wishes,

Dick Davis, Chair
