We are recruiting to fill an Assistive Technology Specialist vacancy with the NM Commission for the Blind.  The position is in our Las Cruces office and serves Southern New Mexico.

Vacancy Announcement
- Job Title: Assistive Technology Specialist

- Full/Part Time: Full-Time

- Regular/Temporary: Regular - Permanent

- Closing Date: Open Until Filled

- Pay Grade: 65

- Salary: The salary range for this position is $32,427 - $56,413 annually ($15.59 - $27.12 hourly). Offered salary will be based on education and experience.

- Why does the job exist? Provides a wide  variety of technology services to Commission vocational rehabilitation clients, including evaluating client needs, evaluating college and employer environments, evaluating new technologies/assistive technologies and assessing their applicability to client needs, making recommendations to VR counselors,  configuring/delivering systems, and delivering training.

- How does it get done? Incumbent provides a wide variety of technology and assistive technology services, primarily to vocational rehabilitation clients of the Commission. These include evaluating clients for technology/asistive technology needs depending on whether the clients are in secondary education, post-secondary education, or work environments; making technology/assistive technology recommendations to VR counselors; ordering technology; configuring systems; delivering systems; and providing training. Works with a wide variety of technology and assistive technology, including general computer hardware and software; networks; screen reading systems; screen magnification hardware/software; electronic note-taking devices; Braille embossers, refreshable Braille displays, and text-to-Braille translation software; Optical character recognition systems; smart phones, and tablets.

- Who are the customers? Persons with blindness or severe visual impairments, family members, school personnel, and employers.

- Ideal Candidate: Individual possesses a Bachelor's Degree with two years of related experience. Related experience would include in-depth experience with assistive technology, including screen readers, screen/video magnifiers, optical character recognition systems, Braille production, and portable book readers; and basic computer technology, including Windows and Mac OS computers, tablets, Microsoft Office, networks, peripherals, and training.


- Minimum Qualifications: Associate's degree and 2 years of experience in assistive technology related to blindness or low vision. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.



These combinations of education and experience qualify you for the position:

High School Diploma or equivalency and four years of experience;

Associate's Degree and two years of experience; or

Bachelor's Degree and no experience.

- Working Conditions:
-- Work is generally performed in an office setting, though work requires frequent visits to client homes, secondary and post-secondary schools, and employer locations; regular exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT), personal computers, printers, scanners, video magnifiers, and Braille displays/embossers; and requires extensive telephone usage. Duties require lifting of typical computer hardware, as well as walking, standing, sitting, bending, and crawling. Regularly works with individuals with secondary disabilities, some of which resulting in challenging behaviors. Occasionally exposed to service animals.  Regular travel is required, including occasional overnight travel using agency vehicles.
