Hi Vejas,
Remember that counseling, within the Blindness specialty, is not the only
area of opportunity. Make sure and reach out to your area General VR Agency
Offices, I believe it's DOR in California? Different District VR Supervisors
will usually have much different ways of looking at helping counselors in
training. One of them may just say, "Come on down, and let's see what we can
work out." I would. I am Blind, and have worked within Blind Rehab in 3
states, but I have also worked in General VR, as I currently do.
Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) is another area which you may
find some work, helping area Transition Counselors wrap up from this crazy
academic year, and prepare for the 2021-2022 sessions. You can also call
your local Veterans Affairs VR Office, and see if Veterans Health or
Veterans Benefits has internship opportunities. And then, there is private
sector VR Counseling, like insurance companies. Do a job search, like on
Indeed, for rehabilitation counselor and see what insurance companies come
up, in your region. Then, you will know who to call, the supervisor, to ask
if they can use an intern. Private companies often have much more latitude
to just invent a position for someone, than us slow-moving, in the box,
government types. Ha! Good Luck!!!
Cheers,
Kyle
