Saavi Services for the Blind is seeking a mission-driven Non-Visual Skills Instructor - Academics & Braille to join our Phoenix training center. This role supports adult students working toward their GED, strengthening college-readiness skills, and building literacy through Unified English Braille (UEB). The position empowers students to gain strong nonvisual academic strategies, confidence, and independence as they pursue higher education and career goals.

Through a strong partnership with the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), Saavi Services for the Blind provides high-expectation, nationally recognized training rooted in Structured Discovery and a positive philosophy of blindness. This role offers a unique opportunity to help students build the academic foundation they need to thrive in college, training programs, and employment.

Position Overview
Based in Phoenix, the Academic & Braille Instructor works with students in both one-on-one and small-group settings, delivering instruction across core academic subjects, college readiness skills, and Unified English Braille. Instruction uses nonvisual techniques, strong problem-solving, and a positive philosophy of blindness while supporting students' confidence and independence.
This position is central to preparing students for GED testing, community college coursework, certifications, and career pathways.

Key Responsibilities
* Teach academic skills needed for GED preparation, including reading, writing, math, science, and social studies
* Provide college readiness instruction-study skills, organization, note-taking, and nonvisual learning strategies
* Offer tutoring and academic support for college-level coursework across multiple subjects
* Teach Unified English Braille (UEB), including Nemeth Code and braille-related technology
* Support students in building strong nonvisual academic habits, confidence, and problem-solving skills
* Maintain progress notes and collaborate regularly with staff on student advancement

Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in Education, Rehabilitation, Disability Studies, or related field
OR equivalent experience teaching or tutoring individuals with disabilities
* National Certification in Unified English Braille (NCUEB) (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
* Experience teaching braille or working in a blindness training setting
* Strong literacy and math skills; familiarity with or willingness to learn Nemeth Code
* Proficiency with braille writers, slate and stylus, notetakers, and Duxbury

Conditions of Employment
* Completion of 3 months of Saavi blindness immersion training
* Ability to pass RSA background check and obtain DPS Fingerprint Clearance Card
* Ability to work some evenings/weekends as needed
* Valid Arizona Driver's License required if driving for Saavi

Compensation & Professional Development
Salary Range: $45,000-$64,000 annually, depending on experience
