> Good afternoon Carmen,
>
> I hope this email finds you well! I am forwarding to you an email from Jeff Thom, Director of Governmental Affairs, California Council of the Blind, who is requesting letters asking Governor Newsom to sign the Council’s sponsored bill AB 371 (Jones-Sawyer). https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220AB371.
>
> This bill will provide the first-in-the-state protections for pedestrians by ensuring someone injured by an e-scooter, whether due to improper obstruction of pedestrian walkways or riding on the sidewalk, are extended liability protections for injuries caused at no fault of their own. Also, this bill requires the addition of braille and tactile signage so injured pedestrians who are blind or have vision impairments have the necessary contact information to file an injury report.
>
> If possible, we’d greatly appreciate if the National Federation of the Blind of California, Riverside-San Bernardino Chapter could submit a request for signature letter to the Governor at Leg.Unit at gov.ca.gov with myself and jessica.devencenzi at gov.ca.gov cc’d as soon as possible. Also, if it is possible to share this with individual members of your organization for them to submit their own personal letters, that would be greatly appreciated.
>
> Attached here is a template letter provided by the California Council of the Blind that can be used by an individual or organization when writing their own letter to the Governor. Please disseminate this letter and ask for individuals or organizations to write a letter requesting the Governor to sign AB 371.
>
> On behalf of Assemblymember Jones-Sawyer, we greatly appreciate your support of this bill and thank you for any assistance you can provide in getting letters from members of the senior and disability communities.

> Thank you!

> As I have stated in other posts, we need letter of support from members and non-members alike, and from both people whoa re sighted and those with vision loss, to make sure the Governor is listening to us and will sign AB371. As most of you know by now, the bill would require renters of e-scooters to have insurance to cover accidents with pedestrians and that these devices have tactile markings to ensure we, as folks with vision loss, can identify the manufacturers of the device for purposes of filing reports of injury. We cannot afford to let the bicycle coalition and Lyft stop us when we are so close to winning this battle and making California the first state in the nation to adopt such requirements. Those who previously wrote on the bill are having letters forwarded to the Governor. I urge those of you who can do so to write a letter of your own using the sample letter attached and filling in the blanks. You can submit the letter to CCB office manager Nicole Pacheco at nicole.pacheco at ccbnet.org and she will make sure the letter goes to the Governor. Thank you for all of your hard work. Also, send this out to friends and organizations that you think might help us. Letters should be sent to Nicole by this Friday, September 2.
