Hi Christine
You might get some good information from the Daisy Consortium:
www.daisy.org
The director's name is George Kerscher
I think they have some free software to make your conversion. If not, they
can make recommendations.

Subject: [Social-sciences-list] DAISY
Hi All,
I was curious if anyone here happens to know if there is software that I
can download that will allow me to convert materials in various forms to
DAISY audio and text that will not cost $900+:)?
Have a wonderful weekend,
Chris
