Subject: Seeking Host for 2009 USABA Goalball National
Championships
Dear Goalball Friends,
Because of unanticipated factors beyond their control,
the site that was going to host the 2009 USABA Goalball
National Championships is no longer able serve as the
host. This means we are now seeking a new location to
host the 2009 USABA National Goalball Championships.
Below is information that outlines the minimum
requiements for ensuring athletes and spectators have a
great tournament experience. If you are interested in
serving as host, we appreciate your support. If you
have questions about serving as a host, please feel
free to contact us.
We understand this is a very quick turnaround, we
apologize for the inconvenience and thank you in
advance for your support of the USABA Goalball program.
Sincerely,
John Potts
United States Association of Blind Athletes
Request for Bids - 2009 USABA Goalball National
Championships
USABA is seeking parties interested in hosting the 2009
USABA Goalball National Championships.
About Goalball: Goalball is a team sport for athletes
who are blind and visually impaired. Each year, USABA
sanctions a National Championship tournament.
Competition will run for two or three days (depending
on the number of gyms provided by the host) and will
include men’s and women’s pool play and medal matches.
Tournament and Participant Information: Approximately
20-22 Goalball teams (12-16 men’s teams, 8-10 women’s
teams), each consisting of four to six athletes, two
coaches and four staff. Eight referees will be
required.
When: June, 2009. Dates are flexible, however the
dates should be late enough that the majority of
student participants are out of school on summer
break.Athletes will typically arrive on a Wednesday or
Thursday with the final matches being held on a
Saturday evening. Athletes typically depart Sunday
morning.
Minimum Staffing, Facility and Logistical Requirements
Selected LOC must be able to provide: Room and board
for approximately 150 individuals (90 males, 60
females).Housing for 8 officials reasonably separated
from athletes/Two or three gyms within close proximity
of each other with seating for 100-250 persons in at
least one of the venues. Gyms must be free of
excessive noise and allow tape and goals to be placed
on the floor for the duration of the event.Concession
stand and eating area for 100+ in between games.
Adequate locker room facilities for athletes and
separate restrooms for spectators.Airport
transportation as well as transportation between
venues.Classrooms or other locations for teams to
gather prior to games.Goalball nets for all venues. If
the LOC does not have nets readily available, the
committee can make arrangements to ship nets in from
either USABA or a local chapter at the LOC's
expense.Eight officials (USABA will provide airfare).A
minimum of one athletic trainer per venue during all
scheduled competition times.A minimum of 12-15
volunteers per site per session (ages 16 and up).
Fees: The Local Organizing Committee (with USABA
approval) has the authority to set entry fees for the
event. Depending on the entry fee, a percentage of
said fees will be remitted to USABA upon receipt.
Percentage will be determined during contract
negotiations.
Special consideration also will be given to bids that
include the involvement of local groups that work with
athletes with disabilities.
