Subject: BORP Goalball Tournament 14 Report

> The 14th BORP Goalball Tournament featured hard fought competition
> throughout the day and a championship finish unmatched in BGT history.
>
> The morning session of 6 games had each of the 4 teams play each other.
> Games were 5 minute halves and ties were allowed.
>
> Game 1 matched the Autopsychic Animals against the Lighthouse Lightning.
> Autopsychic's roster had 2 players, Victor Hakopian and Khemnesuel
> Fisher from last year's championship team, the Grandpas. Autospsychic's
> third player, Bill Johnson, has been a champion twice, in 2000 and 2001.
> Lighthouse was led by Roger Acuna, the all time BORP tournament title
> winner with 5. Coached by Tony Fletcher, the Lighthouse had a strong
> line-up of experienced players including Acuna, Kim Cruz and Shen Kuan
> and two promising rookies, Rusty Rendon and Sergio Lopez. Kim was the
> only woman player this year.
>
> Autopsychic started strong and had a 3-1 lead at halftime. Lighthouse
> surged in the second half behind 2 goals each from Acuna and Rendon but
> came up one goal short and lost 6-5. Hakopian led the Autopsychics with
> 5 goals including all 3 of his team's goals in the second half.
>
> Game 2 had Team Gryffindor in against the River Bats from Sacramento.
> Team Gryffindor had a lot of fire power with Brandon Young and Marco
> Zepeda but that was matched by the Bats rocket arms of Joe Hamilton and
> Jairo Rodriguez. Richard Rueda held down the middle for the Gryffindors
> while Bats rookie Tom Lake proved to be a defensive stalwart on the
> right side.
>
> Game 2 had a similar script to game 1 with the Bats taking a 3-0 first
> half lead and the fighting off a Gryffindor second half come-back to win
> 4-3. All 3 of Gryffindor's goals were scored in the last 1 minute 8
> seconds and if not for a Hamilton goal at 56 seconds mixed into the
> Gryffindor flurry the game would have ended in a tie.
>
> Game 3 pitted Gryffindor against the Autopsychics. A defensive struggle
> with amazing stops on both sides and a 0-0 score at half. In the second
> half Gryffindor got an early goal from Zepeda but Autopsychic's Fisher
> tied the score a minute later. On the very next throw Young scored for
> the Gryffindors and that was the end of any offense for either team.
> Gryffindor wins 2-1.
>
> Game 4 had the River Bats versus the Lighthouse. Lighthouse's Acuna
> scored on the first and last throw of the first half but 3 goals from
> the Bats' Rodriguez had the Bats up 3-2 at halftime. In the second half
> the Bats wore down the Lighthouse defense with 2 goals each from
> Hamilton and Rodriguez and won 7-4.
>
> Game 5 was a back-and-forth contest between Gryffindor and Lighthouse.
> Both teams turned up their offense late in the first half with 5 goals
> scored in less than a minute. That was it for the half and the
> Gryffindors took a 3-2 advantage into halftime. In the second half Young
> added 2 goals to the Gryffindor side but Acuna's 3 goals including the
> tying tally with 11 seconds left earned the Lighthouse a 5-5 tie.
>
> Game 6 between the undefeated River Bats and Autopsychic has a lot
> riding on it as the winner would be seeded number 1 in the semifinals.
> An early goal by Autopsychics's Hakopian was matched late in the half by
> the Bats' Hamilton. Great defense from both teams kept the score at 1-1
> at the half and well into the second half. Hakopian again gave the
> Autopsychic's a lead with a goal at the 3.32 mark but Hamilton blasted a
> goal through a minute later for the tying score and Rodriguez followed
> with what turned out to be the winning goal 45 seconds later. The River
> Bats 3-2 win put them in first after pool play and relegated the
> Autopsychic side to 3rd.
>
> Game 6 was the end of round robin play and the semifinals shaped up as:
> Semi 1 - River Bats vs. Lighthouse Lightning
> Semi 2 - Team Gryffindor vs. Autopsychic Animals
>
> After the completion of the round robin play was the lunch break. Lunch
> was a feast of delicious sandwiches and brownies provide by A Cote.
>
> For the play-offs all games require a winner and the length of the
> halves was also extended to 7 minutes.
>
> Semi 1 saw the full fire power of the Bats unleashed and an overwhelming
> 11-4 victory for the Bats. At one point in the second half the Bats
> scored 5 goals in 7 throws with 3 from Hamilton and 2 from Rodriguez.
> Acuna held up the offensive end for Lighthouse with 3 goals.
>
> Semi 2 had the Autopsychics seeking revenge for a 2-1 round-robin loss
> to Gryffindor. Bill Johnson led the charge with 3 first half goals, his
> first goals of the day and Fisher provided support with another 2 that
> coupled with sterling defense gave the Autopsychics a 5-0 halftime
> advantage. Gryffindor and Autopsychic matched goals in the second half
> but the 5-0 lead was too much for the Gryffindors to overcome and
> Autopsychic won 8-3.
>
> The Third Place Game of Lighthouse and Gryffindor was a scoring frenzy
> in the first half that had Gryffindor up 6-4 at the half. Young and
> Zepeda had 3 goals each for the Gryffindor side while Lighthouse had 2
> goals from Acuna and one each from Kuan and Cruz. In the second half the
> Gryffindors kept up the offensive assault adding 2 goals from Young and
> one from Rueda. Lighthouse added one more goal from Cruz but that was it
> with the final score Gryffindor 9 and Lighthouse 5.
>
> The Championship game matched-up the River Bats and Autopsychic and the
> hope was for a reprise of the drama of their round-robin contest.
> Autopsychic came out with a bang as Hakopian scored on the first throw.
> The Autopsychics built a 2 goal advantage twice in the first half but
> the Bats stayed calm and had the gap to 1 at the half. The second half
> went over 4 minutes with no scores. Goals from Hamilton at the 2.20 mark
> and the 1.18 mark gave the Bats their first lead at 5-4 but it was
> short-lived as Fisher scored at 1.13 to pull the Autopsychics even, 5-5.
> At 9.9 seconds left in the game, the Bats took their final time-out and
> overtime seemed almost certain. The Bats' Hamilton fired a hard shot at
> the left side of the Autopsychics that Hakopian stopped with a slide.
> While still down Hakopian fired a quick gapper that found a seam in the
> Bat's defense and crossed the goal line with 1.2 seconds left in the
> game. The game ended 6-5 Autopsychic and provided a stunning finish to a
> great day of goalball. Hakopian scored on the first and last throws of
> the game.
>
> Individual and team scoring totals are contained in the attached excel
> spread sheet. They are game by game and totals. The figures are number
> of throws, goals scored and penalties.
>
> High scorers
> Hamilton 17
> Acuna 13
> Rodriguez 13
> Young 12

>
> A non-competition highlight of the day was the visit by a large
> contingent from the VA hospital in Palo Alto. BORP and the Lighthouse
> will be collaborating with the VA starting in January to provide
> goalball opportunities to veterans.
