Going heavy is great, but the best way to really build up is to use
bands. Use a light weight on the bar then put HEAVY dumbells on the
floor. Pass the band under the dumbell and put both loops over the bar
all the way up to the weights. You may need a liftoff with these. The
goal is to EXPLODE! push the weight up as fast as possible. I do 5 sets
of 5-8 reps. You can also the use the bands for squatting. This really
helped my squat.

Maxing out too often is actually harmful to achieving maximum strength.
I never completely max out within 3 months of a meet. I figure out about
where my max will be by seeing what weight I can do three reps with.

I agree that the best cardio you can do is grappling. I've never found
anything that worked me as hard as a wrestling practice. Speaking of
working out in the steam room, our wrestling room at the University of
Wisconsin Stevens Point was like a steam room. I'd sweat just sitting in
there doing nothing. By the end of practices the mats were always super
slippery from everyone's sweat. Then there were the sauna practices. Oh
the memories.
