Subject: [Sportsandrec] Audible Badminton

There used to be a company that produced audible badminton shuttle cocks
years ago (Sponge Audio Mass), but they have, as far as I know, have been
long out of business. Years ago (back in the 70's), a grad student did his
dissertation on teaching badminton to the visually impaired, and at the time
the researchers determined that (with available technology for the time)
there were no electronic noise makers that would stand up to the abuse of a
shuttle cock, and they ended up designing a BB filled disc in the birdie.
This approach also requires aerodynamic alterations to cause the birdie to
spin while in flight, and was found to be relatively successful. An
oversized birdie was used to slow the action of the game a bit for the VIPs
as well. I can't remember all the details of the research project, and will
have to search back through my files, but hopefully this will spark some
ideas.

Kelly
