Hi Kelly,

very good points.  I agree with the pepper spray problem.  I suppose it is
the last resort.

I think another valuable aspect of real martial arts training is that you
get hurt in training now and then.  You learn to put up with the pain and it
feeds your focus rather then scaring you away.  By actually getting hurt in
training you will not be distracted when you get hurt in an attack.  

I remember grappling with an opponent who hit me hard in the nose with the
back of her head.  Rather then slowing me down, I just added more to the
defense. I didn't realize how hard she hit me until the match was over and
my nose really hurt.  I hadn't noticed until then.

 I think you need to have these experiences so you don't freeze in an
attack.
