Interested riders may apply for one camp, either May 17-23, 2010 or September (dates TBD). While the May camp is definite, the September camp approval is dependent on level of interest and available funding. Cyclists with physical disabilities ages 16 and up are welcome to apply for this camp. Athletes will learn bike handling skills, safe riding techniques and road racing strategies. Instruction in track riding will also be provided. Athletes eligible for participation include UCI (Union Cycliste International) sanctioned classifications: blind and visually impaired cyclists and their sighted pilots who ride tandem bikes, cyclists with lower mobility impairments who ride hand cycles, cyclists with cerebral palsy or head injury who use both standard bikes and tricycles, and amputee cyclists who ride either single bikes or hand cycles. A special invitation is extended to disabled veterans and disabled members of the armed forces who sustained physical disabilities as a result of service in Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom, and are encouraged to apply. "This is an outstanding opportunity for cyclists who want to gain cycling knowledge and experience, and learn to race competitively," said Mark Lucas, Executive Director of the U.S. Association of Blind Athletes. Camp staff will include certified cycling coaches, a cycling mechanic and a camp coordinator. Several Paralympic cyclists will join rides and speak with attendees to share their knowledge and experience. Riders attending camp will be on their bikes twice per day participating in skill drills, practicing safe riding techniques, competing in race simulations and attending lectures. "We will help network interested riders into their local riding and racing communities and provide a schedule of future race opportunities," said Pam Fernandes, camp coordinator and former Paralympic cyclist. Whatever the outcome for each rider, the goal of the camp is to foster a passion and knowledge for riding and racing. After completing camp, some athletes will choose to become recreational riders while others will strive to become Paralympic champions. No matter which road athletes choose, the camp will open new opportunities for sports and recreation to people with physical disabilities. In the past, some camp attendees have gone on to become World and Paralympic champions and have set National, World and Paralympic records. Room, board and transportation to and from the airport will be provided by the U.S. Olympic Training Center as part of the camp. Athletes will be responsible for their own travel arrangements and will be asked to pay a nominal fee to attend camp. Riders are asked to bring their own bikes and gear to the camp. Tandem riders are encouraged to bring their own pilots, but if needed, USABA will assist in finding pilots for visually impaired applicants. The Application deadline for the May camp is April 15, 2010. The deadline for the September camp is August 10, 2010 Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible as space is limited. For more information or to request an application, contact Pam Fernandes at pamala at quik.com or call (781) 449-9563 (EST). Basics of Guide Running for Track & Field and Trail is a user-friendly video for runners interested in becoming guides for visually-impaired athletes. The video's focus includes how to guide a visually-impaired athlete in the long and triple jumps, sprinting events and trail running. The instructors (Jerome Avery, Wesley Williams and Donald Cooper) are guide runners for U.S. Paralympic medalists, both current and retired, and provide concise and insightful tips for guide runners. Paralympic medalists featured in the video are Elexis Gillette and Josiah Jamison (silver and gold medalists, respectively, 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games) and Tim Willis (winner of five Paralympic medals). "This is an opportunity to open doors for visually-impaired individuals who want to compete in track & field or just to become physically active," said Cathy Sellers, Associate Director of Track & Field High Performance, U.S. Paralympics. Our objective is to eliminate the athlete's challenge of finding a guide and assist individuals interested in becoming guide runners." Mark Lucas, executive director of U.S. Association of Blind Athletes and partner in the video project says, "This DVD is a great tool to introduce athletes, coaches, running clubs and potential guide runners to the simple modifications used to include blind and visually-impaired athletes in the sport of track and field." Interested riders may apply for one camp, either May 17-23, 2010 or September (dates TBD). I am sending a copy of that mail to members on this list in case any of you are also involved with youth goalball or know people who are who should receive this information. If so, I would appreciate it if you would forward this message to anyone you think might be interested. Thanks. Tony. For several years we have considered the feasibility of hosting a goalball tournament for youth in Utah for teams in the Western United States. Since Youth Nationals in Florida is going to be later this year we felt it was time to give the idea of a western tournament serious consideration. A tournament in the western region would give our goalball players another opportunity to participate in a tournament and to prepare for youth nationals. PLEASE GIVE US YOUR FEEDBACK. We will NOT go forward with plans to host a tournament in the fall of this year UNLESS there is support for it. We would do everything possible to keep the cost of the tournament low; we would use local officials, a low or no cost gym, and we would probably not give out t-shirts. That means our costs would mainly be for providing food and trophies or medals. We know that the real cost is the travel and housing. The hotel cost would be about $50/night per room for up to four people. We would provide transportation to/from the airport. I totally get how thrilled you are to get on a tandem for the first time in a while. My hubby and I did a 20 mile ride last weekend with two friends on singles. I'm about to do Cycle for sight, a fund raiser hosted by the Napa Rotary club. The ride benefits the LightHouse for the Blind--where I work. My hubby and I needed to ride a bit before committing to 25 miles and my friend has volunteered as a pilot and she needed some training. I was so thrilled to get on the back of a gorgeous bike and ride the Alameda Creek Trail to the marsh along the SF Bay. It was great! On 3/26/10, Kathy McGillivray wrote: > Hey, all. You were simply the bearer of news. And to all, I have to write what I'm going to write. It will sound witchy, but oh well ... sometimes hard truths cannot be coated in sugar and spice and everything nice. I know Katie davis and she's an excellent judo athlete. she often goes to competitions and makes not only herself proud, but blind judo women across the country proud. Realistically speaking, Katie is one of a growing line of judo women who have placed in international competitions and brought home medals to the good ol' US of A. Usually, women judo athletes are forgotten in the news alerts that are circulated. In fact, most news alerts concentrate on the coaches, and when athletes are mentioned, the news alerts are rather long winded about the men's matches and how they won. Women's matches are glossed over--if written about at all. I should be estatic that Katie is recieving "breaking news" status. What makes me frustrated, and what opens personal, and barely healed, judo wounds, is that many other women are being swept aside and forgotten with the "breaking news" alert that stated that Katie was the third ever woman to medal for the USA. If a "breaking news" alert is circulated, facts, not assumptions, should be checked. Give credit where it is due. Blind judo has been pretty stagnit for almost ten years. In fact, judo fell on its face soon after two blind male judokas brought home the gold to the USA. Anyone remember Kevin Zot? (Sorry, I'm sure I spelled his last name incorrectly.) Yeah, who remembers him? I do. Being the second to do something cool is often glossed over too. Although I was not in Sidney in 2000, I had the honor and privilege to be on Kevin's team, and yes, Scott Moore's team, in 1998 for the World Championships for the blind. (Scott, was the first American ever to win a gold in judo.) The judo team is finally picking itself up from the ground and becoming a team that judo athletes can be proud of again. In fact, the coach at the helm is Scott Moore himself. but, if we want to keep judo, and all the politics behind it, honest and real. Remember all past athletes, not the ones that team members can conveniently remember. If an organization cannot stay honest, in its rules and regulations, in its score keeping, in its attempt to send the best USA representative to international tournaments, in its news statements, in its mission and development to grow blind judo in the US of A, then that organization has a taste of corruption in the mouth. And, I personally, cannot support an organization that doesn't "change what it means to be blind." However, if a blindness organization supporting and developing blind sports chooses to stay honest and true, chooses to change the lives of blind athletes in a wholesome and healthy manner, chooses to grow a kick ass team of blind athletes that can bring home medals, then I choose to wholeheartedly support that organization. so, for blind judo women out there, and for all the future blind women judo medalists ... help me to properly document all women athlete results in all international tournaments. What my memory can produce is below: Tina Thomas, (1994 world Championships), Silver Nicole Civille, (1998 World Championships), Bronze Lisamaria Martinez, (1998 World Championships), Bronze Lorie Pierce, (2002 World Championships), ---- Lorie Pierce, (2003 World Championships), ---- Lorie Pierce (2004 Paralympics), Silver Lisamaria Martinez, (2007 ParaPanAmerican Games), Silver Katie davis, (2010 World Championships), Silver Please help me expand this list. I'll be happy to submit it to USA Judo. Thank you, And respectfully yours, Lisamaria Martinez, President Sports and Recreation Division National Federation of the Blind > Hey LM- Don't even sweat it.
