[Sportsandrec] Blind Golfers & Virtual Golf Accessibility

Hi Tom, and all,

Yep, I get it about there being more important stuff to make accessible
first. I'm all for that. But as I said, I'm all about accessibility being
the norm, not an afterthought, one day. Meaning the more important stuff as
well as recreational stuff shall one day be accessible at the time of it
going on sale to the public. At least if I have anything to say about it,
it will -- and in my lifetime.

There's a Rehab hospital in the Akron area that trains people to play golf
or relearn how to play, after losing limbs or having to be in a wheelchair
or whatever. They work with blind people too. Physical disabilities,
y'know? They happen to have both an outdoor 3-hole course and an indoor
virtual training setup. It's been 8 years or so since I've been there, but
if I'm remembering correctly, I hit the ball into a large movie-screen sort
of thing that showed a video of a course. There were sensors on both sides
with infrared beams or whatever, which tracked the speed and angle and such
things, I think. That translated into speed and distance statistics coming
up on the screen, I think is how it worked back then. Not sure about the
newest gadgets and tech for this sort of thing, though.

I learned about this virtual golf. It is an expensive setup and I think
there are few.
I found one in reno and saw people play briefly. I know blind rights and
all that stuff, but before you convert a virtual golf course I would rather
have everyday stuff that we all need.
Who wants to golf by themselves? My friend kind of explains the course, so
basically too involved.
I don't care about stats, just starting s learning basics.
Do you have a feel for the virtual golf? You are in ,like a little hut
indoors and there is a movie screen like, that has whatever course you
choose. Then you whack the ball and this system somehow calculates where
the ball landed.
