They are saying the first OLYMPIC gold medal, which is accurate.

Actually, the first American to ever take gold for judo was Scott 
Moore in the 2000 Sydney Paralympics. I heard NPR this morning saying 
that America might take home a gold in judo for the first time ever 
and I thought about writing them and letting them know that they were 
wrong. Perhaps it is better to say that the first able-bodied American 
to take home gold was a woman in this year's Olympics.
