Hi LM, just came across your workout dilemma...
The research is really inconsistent on whether or not exercise before bed affects sleep, the general consensus in exercise physiology academia being that it really depends on the individual and the type of workout.
First, it wouldn't really be the adrenalin rush that keeps you up at night in itself. As a hormone, adrenalin is metabolized rather quickly by the body, and it doesn't remain in your system for long. Roughly, by the time your heart rate returns to normal, the adrenalin is gone.
Some types of cardio exercise will induce the release of endorphins (the "runner's high"), and this may actually help someone sleep more restfully. Endorphins are the body's form of morphine.
My personal opinion, is that it is the mental aspect that keeps people up late after a workout. Even thinking "I just worked out and now I won't sleep" can do it. Consider looking into some meditation-type exercises before bed and see if this helps.
Also, are you eating anything after these workouts? Something else to consider.
Some people can workout in the mornings and have energy all day, some can exercise at night and sleep all night. Try experimenting with different types of exercise and see if restful nights come. If, however, that is the only time to workout, you may have to look into some other way to wind down afterwards.
Quick note on sleep; that is when your body recovers and rebuilds from a workout, so try not to get less than you need...or sleep in a few minutes more in the morning...or try to work in a nap.
