Interesting... why did the kettlebell lose popularity after the early 20th
century?

Hay Jason,
Wow I wish I could do 60 lb hammer curls. Thats some very impressive
weight.
I don't know where your strength is currently but those all seem like
reasonable goals.
I just picked up a great e-book on deadlifting by Andy Bolton and would be
happy to send it to you if you want. Yes more leg training is the key to all
of those numbers going up. Got to have a solid base to push from or you
will never reach your full strength potental.
OK the personal training certs.
The HKC is a kettlebell cert that is taught by Dragon Door which is the co
that also teaches the RKC which is the very advanced kettlebell cert. It
was started by Pavel Satzoline(pretty sure I misspelled that)who pretty much
started the whole kettlebell thing about ten years ago. Kettlebells have
been around for over a hundred years and were one of the most popular
training devices back at the turn of the 20th century but they lost
popularity and only recently have gotten the attention they deserve. The
HKC is their "entry level" cert. It is a one day clinic and is totally
physical. You must do five pullups at the beginning just to be in the
clinic!
The TRX as we have discussed in another email is a suspension training
device that also is very popular right now. It was designed by members of
navy seal team six. The co. offers sevral different one day certifacation
programs focusing on teaching classes for groups, private one on one
training and a few more advanced programs.
It is my desire to achieve those two certs both of which are very
specialized.
There are sevral personal training certs. offered by sevral different
groups; the ACE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF EXERCISE, APFA AMERICAN PHYSICAL
FITTNESS ASSOCIATION, NSCA NATIONAL STRENGTH COACHES ASSOCIATIONand sevral
others. Many of these groups offer multiple programs. Group exercise
personal training nutrition, sports medacine, personal training for specific
populations etc etc etc. Most of these are multiple choice on line exams
all written questions etc with no actual physical exams. There really is
not one program that covers it all. All of the really good trainers have
multiple certs. For example my friend Joel who is the strength coach at a
local high school has the HKC, the TRX (personal trainer) and the TRX
(sports medacine) He is certafied under Frank Zane and has a nutrition cert
from the ISSN. I am sure there are people out there with even more letters
after their name. Fittness is a big field with lots of specialitys in it so
deciding which one to get is not an easy question.

Hello, Bill.  I normally do set a goal iin terms of my weight training for
the year, but it is more realistic and practical to set it for a shorter
time period like you said.  So, my goals will be for the upcoming spring
semester of college for me, which is from January to May.

Weight Training Goals:
1.  start dead lifting again (I stopped after pulling a muscle in my back a
while ago) 2.  flat bench 225 lbs. at least 4 sets of 6 reps 3.  hammer curl
60 pound dumbbells comfortably 4.  military press 150 lbs. comfortably 5.
work legs more often

Cardio Goals:
1.  run a mile no longer than 7 minutes
2.  be in better shape for goalball

These all seem like very reasonable goals that I should be able to reach by
summer time.  Similar to you, I also plan on earning a personal training
certificate at my local community college.  You spoke of several types of
certificates (TRX and HKC(.  What are these specifically?  Is there a basic
certificate that covers everything?  Are these certificate courses
rigorous?  Alright, thanks and I hope to hear from you soon.

Hi all,

I have noticed that this list has been very quiet of late and thought I
would throw out something for conversation. First I want to say I never make
new years resolutions.  No one ever keeps them and most times people make
unrealistic ones so they have an excuse to not keep them.  That being said I
like to set personal goals in my weight training and usually will set time
frames such as my birthday(in may) or by the end of summer, or by a trip I
am planning on taking.  I feel these time frames or deadlines(as thats what
they really are)work very well for me.  As usually they are a three to six
month time period rather than just saying, "I want to (insert goal) next
year."

I have set the following goals for my strength training/fittness program for
the following year;

by my birthday(may 21) I want to be able to do 15 pull ups(I have always
sucked at them so I avoided them)

I want to be able to incline press the 100lb dumbells for at least 3 reps

I want to achieve a body weight millitarypress

and finally I want to lose 10-15 lbs of bodyfat

I have two more goals for the year that I can not put a time frame on.  The
reason being that I have no control when  the events will take place.

I want to be certifeid as a TRX trainer and I want to become a HKC certifeid
kettlebell trainer.

I have spoken to the TRX people and they are very receptive to my doing one
of their training programs there are simply none booked in a reasonable
distance at this point.  The HKC people were not so receptive but pretty
much said they would be happy to take my money and if I could do it great
and if not just be prepaired that I would not get any breaks.  It is a pass
or fail training program that requires a lot of hard physical work  and not
just a written test like most personal training certs are. I will simply
have to go into it more prepaired than the rest of the people taking the
class.

OK thats it for me now I would like to hear from some of you as to what you
would like to achievein your own fittness programs in the near future.

I think this list can be more than just an exchange of information and ideas
but also a great source of support and motivation.  I would love to hear
from some of you now and then verbaly kicking my butt to keep me going and
would be more than happy to do the same for any of you who want/need a
little push.

Happy new year to you all

Bill

PS I hope everyone is having a wonderful holliday.
