[Sportsandrec] what to take with you when camping

Julie,

The short wave and HAMM radios allow for two-way communication whereas the weather radio normally only provides weather updates. Yes, generally bulky, and someone who can actually help you needs to be listening. To replace these I use my smart phone with the "find my phone" feature activated. Even if you are out of cell range, the GPS will still pick up a signal, and that signal is what these "find me" apps use. Then, I simply give someone at home access to that account. If I don't return at the prescribed time, this trusted person can activate the lost phone feature and give rescue my location (or the location of the bear that ate my phone).

Hope this helps.

Is an all mode weather radio a specific kind of weather radio? We have a weather radio at home, but it has to plug into an outlet. And did you mean fire starter kit?
