Is the tether solid like a cane or a leash sort?

Hello. When I run with a guy, I use it tether. The guy old one and the tether, and I hold the other end. We got also told me when to turn left or right, or if there are any potholes. Is only one difficulty, when we are running in a large crowd during a race.
