[Sportsandrec] Zumba?

Hay Bridgit,
Since you bake your own goodies I would suggest you check out a site called
Kale kuties.com Think that's it. I interviewed the woman who runs the site
for my podcast sevral months ago. She has lots of natural recipes for
goodies she makes for her children. You might find some good stuff there.

Yes, we have several Farmer's Markets around my area that run through the
summer and fall. I buy organic as much as possible but not everything. I do
avoid processed foods and junk foods. If I want sweets, I usually bake my
own. For my son, we stick with brands like Annie's and Clif and Applegate.
The information out there can be overwhelming, but eating healthier is a
decision we have made in my house and try to stick to as much as possible.

Bridgit,
You make a very important point here. People complain they can't afford to
eat healthy yet they spend a fortune on fast food and eating out in general.
I don't know where you are located but I would guess there might be a
farmer's market some where near you. If that's the case chances are you can
get that same organic food you purchase in the supermarket much cheaper.
One can spend way too much going to big box organic stores like Whole Foods
and Fresh Market but farmers market prices tend to be lower than the
supermarket and the food is going to be much fresher. Just as an example I
pay maybe $2.00 for a big bunch of kale. Was recently in the supermarket
with my wife and they wanted almost $5.00 for a similar sized package! So if
you can find a farmers market and you will be able to save a lot. Two other
points re organic, first you don't need to spend the extra and have
everything organic. Things like nuts or fruits with very thick skins like
various types of melons really don't need to be organic. Pestasides etc
are not going to penetrate a hard nut shell or a very thick fruit skin.
Second I have noticed I can keep fresh veggies from the FM for much longer
than the SM variety. The reason is pretty simple. The FM veggies were likely
picked within the past day or two from somewhere near by and the SM veggies
were probably picked at least a week(or more)ago refridgatated and shipped
across country. So which is better the day old or the week old? To further
emphasize this point I have noticed when my spinach from the SM goes bad it
gets very slimey and has a nasty smell. When the stuff from the FM starts to
go bad it simply wilts. No funky smell and no slime. Wonder what that
tells you.

Well, I do admit it can be easier said than done. The big push for me has
been having kids. I want certain things to be important to them, like health
and activity, and if I don't set the example, they certainly won't think
twice about it. It's all about figuring out what is important to you and
taking steps to achieve it. If that means budgeting, so be it. We all put
our money somewhere, often not always making the best choices. Like I have a
friend who doesn't understand why I spend the money on organic foods because
it's usually a little pricier, but she spends quite a bit on fastfood each
week, and if she channeled the money for fastfood into healthier choices at
the market, she would likely spend about the same. It's all about
perspective. Me, my foolish purchases, shoes, LOL!

Gee Bridgit, you act like a responsible adult who understands that they have
to sacrifice some things in order to get other more important things. Not a
common personality trait in many blind people I have met. Hell budgets and
prioritizing are not skills that many people have these days...blind or
sighted.

For me, the biggest expense is getting to and from an exercise class. When I
go to the Y, I typically take a Lyft or Uber, which cost. But one thing I
calculate in my budget is this expense. It's important to me, so I make it
something I include when budgeting. Just like I do for the type of food I
purchase. I try to eat healthy, so I calculate the cost of organic and
healthier foods into my budget. This is one way to take responsibility for
things that are important to you.

But you can also find friends in classes or sports you participate in who
likely would be willing to drive. I always offer gas money in these
situations, but usually it's cheaper than taking a ride share. And often
they don't accept it, but I think the offer should be made. But finding
someone doing the same activity is another option when it comes to
transportation.

During my triathlon trainings, my partner was always willing to pick me up,
which worked well. We have developed a legit friendship too now.

Bill,

You've brought this full-circle, and to a topic which the list might find
useful. Part of sports and recreation is acknowledging your responsibilities
as a participant. It's actually been one of my regrets. I've had several
running guides who I, frankly, was using without even realizing it. Taking
responsibility for my own participation was a lesson I had to learn the
hard way. What are some recommendations you have for making sure that we're
being equal partners in activities rather than accidentally taking
advantage?

Warmth,
J
