Subject: [Sportsandrec] New Biathlon Event Coming to Ski for Light This Year

Sports and Rec members,

I want to pass the word along that Ski for Light, SFL, has just announced it
will partner with the United States Association of Blind Athletes, USABA, to
provide two and half days of demonstration and instruction in the sport of
biathlon during the SFL International ski week in Colorado. Biathlon is a
sport that combines the intensity of cross-country skiing with the precision
of marksmanship. In recent years Biathlon has been adapted for participants
who are blind utilizing a rifle outfitted with a system of lasers and
auditory signaling. I have had the good fortune to attend an event in
Norway that served as the model for Ski for Light, the Ridderrennett, and I
know the challenge and thrill of this unique sport.

An announcement about Ski for Light will be in the October issue of the
Monitor Miniatures section of the Braille Monitor, but it will not contain
this late breaking news. If you want more details about this new
opportunity to try biathlon or other aspects of Ski for Light, I'll be happy
to try and answer any questions.

The Ski for Light website has full details about its annual ski week, and
I expect more information about the biathlon will be added soon. The
application to attend and costs of the event can also be found on the
website at www.sfl.or

I tried Ski for Light as a blind skier for the first time in 2001, and
loved it so much I volunteered to serve on its Board and now chair its
recruitment committee. If you share my interest in this wonderful sport,
please help me pass the word along.
