I'm a first kyu totally blind Brown Belt in Shotokan Karate and yes it is
possible to spar. I was not allowed to compete however I did spar in class.
The key is keep feeling when your opponent moves away from the contact of
your body and and feel and hear the air when they move towards you. This is
done better with heavy gui uniforms on. This is hard to explain so I'm not
sure if I explained it well.

Subject: [Sportsandrec] blind martial artists

Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone has experience/tips for sparring/striking as a
totally blind person? Also, has anyone competed in a striking art?
I've heard of blind people competing in sports like judo and
jiu-jitsu, but nothing else.
I have been doing Japanese ju-jitsu for about 2 years, but I really
enjoy striking. I am about to start muay thai, and possibly some type
of boxing. I would love to compete in something someday.
Thanks,
Anne
