[Sportsandrec] Blind Gymnast?

Good evening everyone,

When I lived in Massachusetts I knew of a girl who was a blind gymnist. This is exactly why this division needs to create partnerships with main stream sports organizations around the country to create more opportunities for blind persons to participate in a wide variety of sporting and recreational events and to show these groups that these activities are doable and enjoyable by the blind. I really hope this subject was discussed during the Sports and Recreation Division Meeting this year. This division is in a great position to make this happen. It must be a team effort not just the work of one person. All the best.

Subject: [Sportsandrec] Blind Gymnast?

Good evening everyone,

Is there anyone out there who does or know someone who does gymnastics as a blind person? I have been doing some research on some sort of sport or physical activity I could start doing in my area both as a way to get more social and to get active in a fun way, and I don’t have any blindness specific sports like beep baseball or goal ball nearby, but I always loved little bits of gymnastics as a kid. I’m just not sure how accessible would really be as an adult, especially if I were to take mainstream classes in my city. If anybody has tips or connections to somebody that might have some idea of whether this could work, I would really appreciate the responses!

Thanks,

The Maryland Association of Blind Students knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind students because low expectations create obstacles between blind students and our dreams. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.
