[SportsandRec] Differences between a yoga mat and a Pilates mat?

Hi Dacia. Generally a Pilates mat is thicker than a yoga mat. I used a Pilates mat for both because I am thin and I need the extra cushioning on my bum. However, the extra thickness can make it more difficult to do standing balancing poses, especially on one leg, in yoga.
As for your other question regarding do you need a special mat. I am the physical education and recreation project leader at APH; I am not BVI. I field-tested a tactile yoga mat a number of years ago but APH decided not to carry it. There are some people who really liked it, but in general many people felt that because everyone is a different height the tactile markings were not exact for everyone. Many felt as long as they put their own indicator on the mat to show where the center was they could do all the poses without the extra tactile markings. I do not know if that mat is still available. I think the name was tactile yoga mat.
I hope this helps and good luck in your yoga/Pilates endeavors.

Subject: [SportsandRec] Differences between a yoga mat and a Pilates mat?
Hi,
What are the differences between a yoga mat and a Pilates mat? I am wanting to try and start doing both of those exercise programs, but see that I need different mats for each of them. Do you know anywhere that sells a Pilates mat and a yoga mat as a bundle? also, as a blind person, do I need any special kind of yoga mat or Pilates mat to help me know how I need to lay?
Thanks,
Dacia
