Tis the season to be jolly--or is it?   Here is the beginning of a Christmas 
story.   The challenge is to finish it in 2000 words, give or take:

Elves don't celebrate Christmas.   One elf can't reach every home in one 
night.   Some kids get no presents no matter how good they've been.   And 
reindeer, even rudolph, can't live forever.   

So maybe Santa could be forgiven for the depression he fell into each 
December first.

The holiday of love and joy had long ago turned into the holiday of greed and 
merchandising.   People had foregone the pleasure of giving for the thrill of 
receiving.   No wonder retirement at the old Elves' home looked better and 
better...
